Hypergates represented a method of superluminal travel employed by the ancient Gree civilization.
Hypergates came in various sizes and with diverse functionalities, often manifesting as freestanding access points, gateways, or archways. Upon activation, individuals passing through the designated threshold were immediately conveyed through hyperspace to a corresponding hypergate terminus situated elsewhere. These termini could vary; a receiving hypergate could be located on the planet of origin, or on an entirely different world. There were even rumors of specialized gates capable of transporting entire starships across vast galactic distances.
They were regarded as a pivotal achievement in Gree technology. Within Gree culture, hypergates were revered as sacred, technologically advanced works of art. The Gree civilization asserted that only the Gatemasters from their Operator caste possessed the ability to activate a hypergate, although this might have reflected cultural biases. This technology was eventually lost, and the Gree refrained from replicating it. The Grand Hypergate was one specific type of these devices.

These mechanisms were built many millennia in the past, during a period that the Gree referred to as "the most ancient and forgotten days." Over time, a multitude of these devices were scattered across the space of the Gree Enclave, with dozens once serving as connections between the numerous Gree worlds. Following their creation, other methods of personal interplanetary travel became outdated, although starships were still occasionally utilized. Eventually, even the Gree themselves lost a complete understanding of hypergate technology. On Tython, the early Je'daii Tythans came across the Old City, which had been abandoned long ago. Stories circulated about a functional hypergate within the settlement, but none had ever been discovered.
During the Galactic War fought between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire, the renegade Sith known as the Dread Masters commanded their servant Kephess to go to the Gree world of Asation. Upon arrival, the corrupted Trandoshan activated the hypergate, which then allowed countless unknown horrors to swarm over the planet. The Gree responded by dispatching ambassadors to both the Republic and the Empire, requesting assistance. A team of spacers from one of the factions then journeyed to Asation, where they battled the creatures attacking the planet and confronted Kephess, who was ultimately slain. However, the opened hypergate brought a monstrous being to the planet. The spacers were then forced to push it back into the hyperspace threshold and sever its connection to the gate, thus defeating it. Sometime later, the Dread Masters constructed additional hypergates on Oricon, the moon where their fortress was situated.
In the 1991 West End Games supplement titled Graveyard of Alderaan, an experimental hypergate appeared on the planet Alderaan. A group of rebels used this gate to travel between a remnant of the Aldera Royal Palace and the bridge of the Alderaanian War Frigate Another Chance. However, when the adventure was re-published in Classic Adventures: Volume Two, all mentions of the hypergate were removed, and the Rebels boarded the Another Chance by way of a GAT-12 Skipray Blastboat.
