Gruna was a male Nessie who functioned as the captain of an Ithullan ore hauler. This vessel transported valuable mutonium ore through the dangerous Stenness Node in the time leading up to the Great Sith War. Frequently, pirates, including Finhead Stonebone and his gang, attacked Gruna's ship because of its precious cargo. To combat this threat, Gruna compensated Bogga the Hutt, a local crime lord, for protection during the ore hauler's voyages through pirate-infested space. During one particular shipment in 3999 BBY, Stonebone's crew launched an ambush on Gruna's ship, resulting in the death of Dreebo, Bogga's enforcer, and the theft of some ore. However, Bogga's warship, the Enforcer One, emerged from hyperspace, capturing the pirates and rescuing Gruna, his crew, and the remaining cargo.
In the period preceding the Great Sith War, Gruna, identified as a male Nessie, served as the captain of an Ithullan ore hauler starship. This ore hauler belonging to Gruna, constructed from the shell of a Colossus wasp, was responsible for transporting valuable mutonium ore from mining operations within the Stenness Node to the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal. These undertakings, however, were fraught with danger, as pirates in the area commonly targeted the ore haulers as they navigated the Node. To safeguard his cargo against these marauders, Gruna made substantial payments to Bogga the Hutt, a crime lord of the area, in return for armed escorts.
In 3999 BBY, while Gruna was conducting a standard mutonium shipment to the Stenness Hyperspace Terminal, Finhead Stonebone's gang of pirates ambushed his ore hauler. Dreebo, one of Bogga's subordinates, rapidly intervened, piloting his starfighter to defend Gruna's vessel. However, C'borp, a pirate gunner aboard the pirate vessel Marauder Starjacker, killed him. With Gruna and his vessel now vulnerable, the pirates penetrated the hull of the ore hauler and began stealing the ore. Nevertheless, Bogga's warship, the Enforcer One, materialized from hyperspace, leading to the capture of the pirates and the salvation of Gruna and his crew.
Gruna held a deep contempt for the pirates who infested the Stenness Node, often referring to them as "scum." He was easily frustrated and angered when pirates attacked his vessel, expecting Bogga's enforcers to arrive to his aid more promptly.
Gruna makes an appearance in Tales of the Jedi: The Saga of Nomi Sunrider, which is the second story arc of the Tales of the Jedi comic book series. Tom Veitch wrote the series, which was published in late 1993 and early 1994. Gruna's only appearance in the series is in the second issue of the arc, with illustrations by David Roach. In 1998, an entry about Gruna was included in the Star Wars Encyclopedia, and in 2008, he was featured in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.
