Biography

Cold War

Early career and the Planet Prison

Galen, a male human, became an operative for the Republic Strategic Information Service, which served as the primary intelligence agency of the Galactic Republic, during the Cold War against the Sith Empire. Around the year 3643 BBY, he held a position on the Republic's capital world, Coruscant, where he oversaw the SIS base located within the Senate Tower. When a team of thieves successfully stole the design schematics for the Planet Prison superweapon, General Var Suthra of the Mon Calamari tasked Galen and his team with leading the subsequent investigation. While Galen coordinated his investigative efforts with the Coruscant Security Force, he maintained leadership over the investigation and reported directly to General Suthra.

Galen's investigation quickly yielded positive results, as his operatives were able to identify one of the thieves from a security recording—a Rodian known as Vistis Garn. Subsequently, Galen reported directly to Suthra, who was in conversation with Jedi Masters Bela Kiwiiks and Orgus Din, the former Padawan of Orgus, Kira Carsen the current Padawan of Kiwiiks, and Doctor Eli Tarnis, the individual responsible for creating the Planet Prison. Upon learning that Galen had obtained a promising lead, Din instructed his former Padawan—now a Jedi Knight—to collaborate directly with Galen, while the Jedi Masters and Suthra proceeded to confer with the Supreme Chancellor Dorian Janarus. Kiwiiks also suggested that Carsen remain, as her security expertise could be valuable. Galen then shared his lead with the two young Jedi and Doctor Tarnis, explaining that Garn, known for his association with the criminal Migrant Merchants' Guild, had recently been observed raiding a military storage facility to obtain high-grade munitions and weaponry.

The Knight, accompanied by the astromech droid T7-O1, traveled to the Old Galactic Market, which was under the Guild's control, to retrieve the stolen weapons and design files. Meanwhile, Galen remained at the Senate Tower, collaborating with Carsen to create a diversion for the criminals using Coruscant's security network. Despite the Knight and T7 successfully retrieving the stolen files and weapons, Galen and Carsen encountered a security breach. Members of the Black Sun criminal syndicate managed to infiltrate the Senate Tower's security and abduct Doctor Tarnis, despite the SIS's presence. Upon being contacted by the Knight, who reported their success, Galen abruptly ordered the Jedi to return to the Senate Tower to assist in the search for Tarnis. Galen was alarmed to discover that Garn had been contracted by Black Sun to steal the files in the first place, and he delegated the recovered files to his subordinate Krand for decryption.

As Galen was explaining the situation to the Knight, he received a holocall from Carsen, who, along with CSF forces, had pursued the kidnappers to the nearby spaceport. She and the security team had cornered the kidnappers in Docking Bay 84, but were unable to advance further. Galen instructed the Knight to assist Carsen, and together the two Jedi successfully defeated the Black Sun members and determined that Tarnis had been taken to Black Sun territory.

The Jedi Knight, while pursuing the Black Sun operatives believed to have kidnapped Doctor Tarnis, uncovered that Tarnis was, in fact, a Sith Lord and the offspring of Darth Angral. This revelation jeopardized all of the Republic's superweapon projects. Shortly thereafter, Galen departed Coruscant to secure the Power Guard Enhancement System on Nar Shaddaa.

Power Guard project

Galen became a Power Guard for the rest of his life

Soon after establishing himself on Nar Shaddaa and commencing his work, Galen was captured by the Sith Lord Sadic. Subsequently, Sadic transformed Galen into a Mark III Power Guard, compelling him to obey his commands through the infliction of extreme pain for any refusal. In a final act of resistance, Galen turned against Sadic and the other Power Guards. However, they proved too powerful, and Galen sustained severe injuries. Despite this, Galen survived and learned to control his implants with assistance from the SIS. Utilizing his newfound abilities, Galen went deep undercover within Sith territory. He contacted the Knight who had rescued him, informing them of his assignment and expressing gratitude for demonstrating that he still had a purpose in life.

Personality and traits

Galen was a highly capable and devoted agent of the SIS. Protecting the Republic was his utmost priority, even at the cost of his own life.

However, his transformation into a Power Guard dramatically altered his personality. He became despondent and miserable, not only due to his enslavement to Sadic but also because of his unwilling transformation. Even after Sadic's demise, he still preferred death to living as a machine, even contemplating suicide. Nevertheless, he retained some semblance of humanity and loyalty, as evidenced by his assistance to the Hero of Tython in defeating Sadic. Following Sadic's defeat, he initially preferred to remain and die, but he ultimately complied with the SIS's urging to accompany them.

Subsequently, Galen learned to control his implants and accept his condition. He later sent a message to the Jedi, expressing his gratitude for showing him that he still had a reason to live.

Behind the scenes

Galen makes his first appearance in Star Wars: The Old Republic as a part of the main story quests for the Jedi Knight narrative arc. In the dark side ending, when Galen is a Power Guard cyborg, the Republic player has the option to kill him instead of allowing him to live and sacrifice himself.
