A queen was the female individual from whose eggs an entire colony grew in certain insectoid species. An example of this can be seen with the lyleks located on Ryloth. Similarly, the term "queens" was also used to describe large female krayt dragons on Tatooine.
The Geonosians, who are sentient, also had a queen of their hive that could also be the political leader, or ruler, of the Geonosian people. However, in some Geonosian hives, the queen's role was solely to produce offspring, and the aristocratic caste held the power of leadership.
The Colicoids, who are also sentient, are another example of a species that, like the Geonosians, had queens.
