The triumphant submission in the "Darth Who Contest" unveiled the official Sith designation for a significant character. This revelation occurred within the pages of Legacy of the Force: Sacrifice, which is the fifth installment in the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force saga. The deadline for submissions was 12:00 am EST on December 1, 2006. The February/March 2007 edition of the Del Rey Star Wars newsletter stated that a total of 8500 entries were received. Lucasfilm and Del Rey editors, along with the authors of the Legacy of the Force series, narrowed down the submissions to the top five names. These finalists were revealed to the public on January 23, 2007.
The Essential Reader's Companion notes that Darth Kallus was the temporary Sith name given to Jacen during the Darth Who Contest.
Only registered members of the Star Wars official site, who were also American citizens over 18 years of age, were eligible to participate in the contest. Each eligible member could only submit a single name. The contest ran from October 3 until November 30, 2006. The top five entries were selected by Aaron Allston, Troy Denning, and [Karen Traviss],/article/karen_traviss) and were then posted on the official site on January 23. Voting remained open on the site until February 27, 2007, allowing registered members to vote for their preferred name.
Initially, there was speculation that the Legacy book series might influence whether Jacen Solo would become Darth Krayt from the Legacy comic books. This was a popular fan theory before the book's release. However, the announcement of the contest changed this, since the Sith name would be determined by a contest and Darth Krayt was not among the potential names. The Legacy comic later revealed that the former Jedi Master A'Sharad Hett was Darth Krayt.
The winner, Darth Caedus, was revealed in Legacy of the Force: Sacrifice. Del Rey Books and Lucas Licencing Ltd. expressed their gratitude to the winner, Tawnia Poland, for contributing the name in the acknowledgements at the start of the novel. The fans who participated in the Darth Who contest were also thanked.
