Dyclops

The Dyclops were a sentient species notable for possessing two heads, each equipped with a mouth, solitary eye, and an ear, despite their otherwise largely humanoid physiology. During the early days of the Galactic Empire, a Dyclops became affiliated with the Red Fury Brotherhood, a piratical organization headed by Reddjak. This Dyclops functioned as a gunner on the Blood Brother, which was Reddjak's personal starship.

Biology and appearance

A Dyclops hit in the chest

The Dyclops represented a species of two-headed sentient beings, drawing parallels to the Troigs originating from the planet Pollillus in this unique characteristic. Beyond this duality, their physical structure closely resembled that of humanoids, exhibiting bipedal locomotion, an upper torso, and a pair of arms. Their knees featured a forward-bending articulation, facilitating seated positions with an upright back, resting on their buttocks or haunches. When seated, a Dyclops's height exceeded that of an R2-series astromech droid, which had a height of 0.96 meters.

A Dyclops possessed two egg-shaped cranial structures, each distinguished by a lipped mouth and a solitary eye shielded by a prominent dark eyebrow. A singular, fleshy ear projected from the lateral aspect of each head. Upon opening, each mouth revealed a complete array of white, blunt teeth. Notably, they lacked a visible nose and were devoid of hair, save for their eyebrows. At least one member of this species exhibited purple skin, complemented by yellow irises and sclerae. Dyclops had hands with four fingers, including an opposable thumb, enabling them to execute precise grasping and manipulation of objects. Their fingers culminated in rounded, enlarged tips, marked by distinctive horizontal indentations. The upper chest region of a Dyclops was identified as a vulnerable area; a direct impact there could induce unconsciousness.

Society and culture

Mirroring the situation with the Troigs, a Dyclops's two heads were regarded as a unified entity. Instances occurred where the two heads shared thoughts, with one initiating a sentence and the other completing it. Similar to numerous humanoids, they demonstrated amusement through smiling and laughter. At least one Dyclops exhibited proficiency in Galactic Basic Standard.

Dyclops in the galaxy

During the early days of Emperor Palpatine's Galactic Empire, a Dyclops engaged in acts of piracy and served as a gunner aboard the Blood Brother, a modified Consular III-class cruiser under the command of the pirate Reddjak, who was the leader of the Red Fury Brotherhood. Llez, a green-skinned youngling who had been enticed onto the Blood Brother on one occasion, rendered the Dyclops incapacitated. Zell, the ambassador from the planet Majoor and father of Llez, subsequently ordered the arrest of the gunner, along with the remainder of the ship's crew.

Behind the scenes

A two-headed Troig

A Dyclops appeared as a member of a pirate crew in Droids (1986) 3, a comic book initially released by Marvel's Star Comics imprint on May 13, 1986. The character's conceptualization is credited to writer Dave Manak and artist John Romita Sr.. In June 2013, writers Rich Handley and Abel G. Peña formally identified the character's species in the inaugural installment of the article series "The Droids Re-Animated," featured on the official Star Wars Blog. Peña later clarified on TheForce.net's Jedi Council Forums that he had considered classifying the two-headed character as a Troig, but inconsistencies in the details ultimately precluded this identification. Specifically, Troigs possess four arms, a tail terminating in a spiked bulge, and each of their heads is equipped with two eyes and two ears.
