DV-692

DV-692 was a Galactic Empire officer who was a clone stormtrooper. He was part of the 501st Legion during the time of the Galactic Civil War. While serving under the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader on the Imperial Star Destroyer Devastator, DV-692 took part in the capture of the Rebel CR90 corvette Tantive IV in 0 BBY. He also commanded a squad that was tasked with finding the ship's passengers. While searching one of the corvette's corridors, his squad located Leia Organa, the Alderaanian senator, and DV-692 used a stun weapon on her as she attempted to flee. His unit then escorted their captive to Vader and then to the Devastator's prison.

Biography

DV-692, firing on Organa

As a male Human clone, DV-692 served the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War as an officer within the Stormtrooper Corps. He was a member of the 501st, an elite stormtrooper legion, where he was in charge of a squad. DV-692 was stationed aboard the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Devastator in 0 BBY, under the command of Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith.

That year, Rebel operatives transmitted the stolen plans for the first Death Star, a new Imperial superweapon, to the Rebel CR90 corvette known as the Tantive IV. The Devastator pursued and captured the Tantive IV above the planet Tatooine; the Tantive IV was the consular ship of Senator Leia Organa from Alderaan. DV-692 and his squad, led by an assault commander, were among the first stormtroopers to board the Tantive IV. After the Imperial troopers overcame the initial Rebel resistance, Vader boarded the ship and instructed the stormtroopers to locate and capture the passengers of the Tantive IV alive.

DV-692 divided his squad into two teams, directing one to search a passageway and secure a junction while he led the other down a different corridor. Their orders were to search both the forward and aft passageways. One of DV-692's squadmates noticed Organa hiding in a small alcove and alerted DV-692 to her location. However, Organa drew her weapon faster than DV-692's squadmate and fatally shot him dead. Organa then attempted to escape, but DV-692 used his E-11 blaster rifle to stun her. The squad then escorted Organa to Vader, who instructed them to take the prisoner to the Devastator's holding facility.

Equipment

During the battle on the Tantive IV, DV-692 was equipped with an E-11 stormtrooper blaster rifle and wore standard stormtrooper armor without any rank insignia.

Behind the scenes

A New Hope and early character development

DV-692, inspecting Organa in Dark Horse Comics's adaptation of A New Hope

The character known as DV-692 initially appeared in the Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope novelization, written by Alan Dean Foster but credited to George Lucas, the film's director, and released on November 12, 1976. The novel depicted DV-692 with rank insignia on his arm, a detail absent from the film released on May 25, 1977. His first visual representation was in Marvel Comics's Star Wars series, specifically the first issue published on April 12, 1977, which was written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Howard Chaykin, Jim Novak, and Marie Severin; only his right hand and feet were shown in the comic.

His first live-action appearance was in A New Hope, where he was portrayed by an uncredited extra. His scene was filmed at Elstree Studios in the United Kingdom between June 29 and July 16, 1976, during the final days of principal photography. Terry McGovern, a disc jockey, provided DV-692's voice over a walkie-talkie, with sound designer Ben Burtt recording the lines. The sound effect for his stun shot combined the sound of an air cannon with an ARP synthesizer playing a note with a "rising pitch and a delay" to create a bombinating effect. The helmet worn by DV-692 was missing a heat dispenser vent decal on its "cheeks." The A New Hope expansion set of Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Trading Card Game, released in 2002, was the first to identify the trooper as a clone stormtrooper named "DV-692."

Inconsistencies

In Classic Star Wars: A New Hope, DV-692's role is combined with that of his squadmate (pictured).

In the 1981 Star Wars radio drama, adapted and presented in 1994's Star Wars: The National Public Radio Dramatization, DV-692 was referred to as "3rd Trooper." The radio drama gave him a slightly longer line of dialogue, suggesting that another trooper in his squad, rather than DV-692 himself, shot Organa.

The dialogue attributed to DV-692 differs slightly across various adaptations of the film, including the novelization, the radio drama, the Marvel comic, and the Contemporary Motivators: Star Wars comic published in 1977. Furthermore, in the 1995 Classic Star Wars: A New Hope adaptation, the roles of DV-692 and the squadmate shot by Organa are combined into a single stormtrooper sergeant who identifies Leia and stuns her, but not before she shoots two other stormtroopers.
