Deggen Sont

Former Imperial Deggen Sont chose to abandon his post, liberating the Wookiee named Drokkatta from enslavement at a Geonosis mining operation. Once freed, Drokkatta pledged a life debt to Deggen Sont. Seeking to evade the Empire's grasp, he became part of a rebel convoy transporting civilians to a secret rebel sanctuary. The Empire launched an ambush on the convoy, but the transport carrying him managed to jump to hyperspace and escape the conflict. Ultimately, the hyperdrive malfunctioned close to Tatooine, resulting in a crash landing for the damaged vessel. Deggen Sont, together with the other survivors, established a temporary settlement before being assaulted by Captain Terro and his forces.

Biography

Service and desertion

Deggen Sont was a man who was once a member of the Galactic Empire. After graduating from an Imperial Academy, he was assigned to an Imperial [mining](/article/mining] facility located on the planet Geonosis. This facility relied on the forced labor of Wookiees for its operations. While stationed there, Deggen encountered Drokkatta, one of the Wookiee slaves. Eventually, Deggen made the decision to defect from the Empire, assisting Drokkatta in escaping his captivity. Following their escape from the facility, Drokkatta swore a life debt to Deggen as a result of his actions.

Stuck on Tatooine

During the Galactic Civil War, either during or before the events of 0 BBY, Deggen Sont, now an Imperial fugitive due to his desertion, traveled with Drokkatta on a rebel convoy tasked with transporting civilians to a concealed rebel location. The Empire set up an ambush for the convoy, leading to a battle. The transport that Deggen was aboard was able to jump to hyperspace and get away from the battle. However, the hyperdrive failed near Tatooine, resulting in the damaged ship crashing on the planet. Deggen and the other survivors created a camp where they stayed until they were attacked by Imperial troops under the command of Captain Terro.

A squad of rebels, including Drokkatta, fought against Terro's forces as the Stormtrooper captain tried to gather the survivors and take them aboard his dropship. They were joined by some of Jabba the Hutt's men and fought together to push back the Imperial forces. During the skirmish, Deggen made sure to cover his face in fear of being recognized as an Imperial defector and eventually ran to safety as the rebel squad covered his escape. Terro, overwhelmed, fled with some of the survivors he captured, leaving the rest behind, their fate in Jabba's hands. More of Jabba's men then arrived and escorted the survivors aboard skiffs. While on the skiff, Deggen "thanked" Drokkatta for almost getting him killed, and stated that the life debt was silly after the Wookiee gave him an annoyed glance.

Upon arriving at Jabba's Palace, Deggen was separated from Drokkatta. Deggen was sent to the palace's prison while Drokkatta and the rest of the rebel squad were brought before Jabba. While in the dungeon, one of Jabba's slaves, a woman named Senza, tended to him and the other survivors. Drokkatta was eventually brought down to the prison where the Wookiee checked on Deggen. Deggen stated that he deserved to be behind bars, but he didn't think anything could be worse than an Imperial prison. After their conversation, Drokkatta left to do a job for Jabba while Deggen stayed behind in the cell.

Life debt

After a successful mission, Drokkatta and the rest of the squad returned to the prison to check on the survivors. Drokkatta checked on Deggen Sont who was in the middle of spitting out his meal. Deggen then gave the Wookiee his bantha meat, stating that he'd just eat the nutrient paste which reminded him of his time at the academy. Deggen then said that if Drokkatta got him out of this place, then as far as he was concerned, the life debt was paid. After their discussion, Drokkatta then left with the rest of the rebel squad to go on more missions for Jabba while Deggen was left in the prison with the other survivors.

Eventually, Deggen Sont and three other survivors were brought into Jabba's audience chamber and chained by their necks. The rebel group then attacked the palace, something the Hutt anticipated. When the squad entered the chamber, Jabba stated that they are just in time to watch their friends die. Jabba then pressed a button on his dais which opened up a trap door and dropped two of the survivors into a pit which housed a rancor. Jabba then fled behind a door, using the other two survivors as shields. The rebel squad split up, some dropped into the pit to fight the rancor and the others pursued Jabba before he could get away. The rebels managed to defeat both the rancor and Jabba, freeing Deggen and the rest of the survivors. They left the palace on a speeder bike and headed towards civilization. On their way there, Deggen told Drokkatta that the Wookiee did a good job. Drokkatta then stated the they were even, to which Deggen said he was no expert in the Wookiees' backwards ways, but he always assumed a life debt was for life. Having escaped Jabba's control, Deggen Sont, Drokkatta, and the other survivors boarded a transport and left Tatooine.

Behind the scenes

Deggen Sont's initial appearance was in the Star Wars: Imperial Assault companion app Legends of the Alliance, specifically within the "Jabba's Realm" campaign, which became available for download during 2018. There is a possibility that Deggen Sont will be among the eight crash survivors featured in the first mission, or he is guaranteed to be present if the player selects Drokkatta to be part of the squad. This article makes certain assumptions about the campaign's progression, which may differ based on the player's decisions. This article is written from the perspective of having Drokkatta as one of the members in the squad. The dialogue between Deggen Sont and the players differs slightly depending on whether Drokkatta is present in the squad or not.

Alternate paths

The ultimate fate of Deggen Sont can differ depending on the player's actions and accomplishments throughout the missions. Deggen Sont could potentially become enslaved by Jabba the Hutt, be devoured by a rancor, be abandoned at Terro's camp, or successfully escape Tatooine alongside the squad.

Terro's camp

If the players are unsuccessful during the fight when Terro attacks the survivors' camp, then Deggen Sont can end up being one of the survivors taken away on the dropship. If this is the case, then the players don't see Deggen again until later in the story. When the squad attacks the Imperial listening post, Deggen has a chance to be the individual in the bacta tank. If this is the case, then after releasing him from the tank he will explain that Terro took the other survivors to an outpost where he has sheltered and fed them. If a different character is in the bacta tank, then Deggen is at Terro's camp with the other survivors. If the players choose to make a deal with Terro, then he will bring the group to the outpost where they can find the other survivors, including Deggen. If the players instead choose to kill Terro, then they never go to the outpost and Deggen Sont, along with the other survivors, are left behind there.

Prisoner

If the players fail to complete the first mission Jabba sends them on, then when the characters check on the prisoners, Jabba has their food taken away as punishment for their failure. If Deggen Sont is one of the prisoners, then his food will be taken away as well. He also has a chance to demand for the Gamorrean guard to give him his food back. Deggen will ask the Gamorrean if he knows who he is, to which the guard will pause for a moment to think, before ultimately deciding he doesn't know who Deggen is and knocks him unconscious.

Rebel help

When the group obtains the code cylinders, they have the option to keep them for the Rebel Alliance and not give them to Jabba. If they choose to keep them for the Alliance, then the group gets picked up by a rebel agent and taken to an outpost. The rebel agents will then rescue the survivors from Jabba's palace, which includes Deggen Sont if he wasn't captured by Terro. The rebels then find an Imperial tracker on their ship, which prompts them to attack the Imperial listening post on Tatooine. The survivors are left at the outpost, and while the group goes to attack the listening post, Jabba's forces attack the outpost and recapture the survivors, including Deggen.

Enslavement

The finale of the story can end with either the players choosing to storm the palace or trade themselves for the freedom of the survivors. When they trade themselves, the survivors, including Deggen Sont, are freed from their imprisonment. If the player successfully defeat Jabba afterwards, then the rebels meet up with the survivors. When the rebels attack the palace, Deggen has a chance of being one of the four survivors chained in the audience chamber. If Deggen is one of the survivors in the chamber, then he has a chance of either being one of two of the survivors to be dropped into the rancor pit, or one of two of the survivors to be used as a shield by Jabba as he flees. If the players fail to defeat the rancor while Deggen is in the pit, then he is eaten by the rancor. If the players fail to defeat Jabba while Deggen is being used as a shield, then Jabba flees with him and the other survivor and they become enslaved. Deggen also becomes enslaved, along with the rebels and the rest of the survivors, if the players fail to make it to the audience chamber during the attack on the palace.
