Deesco

Jar Jar Binks ready for deesco dancing

Deesco represents a style of music and dance that was part of the culture of the Gungans. The Gungans are a species of amphibious humanoids originating from the planet Naboo. Deesco was characterized by its improvisational dance style and the usage of colorful lights illuminating the dance floor. Within the underwater city of Otoh Gunga, a specific hydrostatic bubble was constructed specifically to facilitate deesco dancing. The Gungan named Jar Jar Binks was well-known as an enthusiastic participant in deesco dancing. Some of the recognized deesco dance moves included actions like the "Jumping Jack", the "Ballet Spin", the twist, performing high kicks, and the act of waving one's arms in a slow, elevated manner.

Behind the scenes

Deesco dancing appeared as one of six activities in Star Wars: Early Learning Activity Center, a video game for children that Lucas Learning launched in 2000. The style's name and attributes suggest a humorous imitation of disco, a widely popular music style during the 1970s. A comparable disco reference later surfaced in the 2003 video game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, where the intro showcased various Star Wars characters engaging in disco dancing beneath a glitterball shaped like the Death Star. The game's arcade mode also featured a disco ball alongside Meco's disco-inspired remix of the Star Wars theme when the player got near the Arcade machines.
