Before the Imperial Period, the native tribes of the Wild Space planet Culroon III, known as the Culroon, engaged in numerous, devastating, and seemingly never-ending wars over the course of many centuries. These ongoing battles hindered the Culroon's technological progress, preventing them from reaching a level where they could achieve space travel. This also led the Galactic Republic to steer clear of any interaction with the world. The introduction of sophisticated weapons via off-world trade provided the combative Culroon with tools they were quick to employ.
Eventually, a Culroon warlord named Kloff rose to dominance in these conflicts. Around 9 BBY, he brought the wars to an end, using imported weaponry to unify the planet under his rule. Sometime after the Republic's transformation into the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, Emperor Palpatine commanded the occupation of Culroon III, which involved establishing a garrison within Kloff's territory. Kloff subsequently launched an insurrection against the Empire, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
The initial reference to the conflicts on Culroon III appeared in the short story "The Promotion of Lieutenant Veers." This story was included in The Star Wars Sourcebook, published in 1987 and authored by Bill Slavicsek and Curtis Smith.
