An incident transpired on the world of Coruscant around the period of the Naboo Invasion. Royal Naboo Security Forces personnel were providing security for diplomats en route to Coruscant, at which point the Sith Lord known as Darth Maul ambushed them, acting under the instructions of his Sith Master, Darth Sidious. Lieutenant Gavyn Sykes successfully repelled Darth Maul. A subsequent inquiry into the event yielded no results.
Circa 32 BBY, Darth Sidious, the Sith Lord, orchestrated a confrontation by tasking his apprentice Darth Maul with evaluating the capabilities of the Royal Naboo Security Forces pilots. Piloting his Infiltrator, Darth Maul appeared suddenly and launched an assault on two Naboo N-1 starfighters and the delegates present on their landing platform located on Coruscant. Captain Quarsh Panaka commanded Lieutenant Gavyn Sykes to force the attacker to retreat. Sykes accomplished this by firing torpedoes from his N-1 starfighter at Darth Maul, compelling him to withdraw, despite Maul's deployment of airborne mines against him. During the pursuit, Sykes discovered an upgrade for his vehicle.
A later investigation into the incident by the Galactic Senate failed to uncover any meaningful information.
Coruscant Encounter is a bonus mission featured in the 2000 video game Star Wars: Episode I: Battle for Naboo, and becomes accessible after the player obtains all silver medals in the primary campaign, or by using cheat codes. The mission contains a vehicular upgrade, and collecting it fulfills the bonus objective. The mission itself does not specify the exact timeline of the encounter, but it is understood to have occurred before the events of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, as Darth Maul was defeated on Naboo and presumed deceased during the film. Acquiring the hidden upgrade will complete the bonus objective. The 2011 publication Star Wars: The Official Starships & Vehicles Collection 62 corroborated that the event predated the movie.
