Chott el Djerid (in Arabic: شط الجريد) constitutes a dry salt lake situated in the southwestern region of Tunisia.
These salt flats served as the filming location for the exterior shots depicting the Lars homestead on the planet Tatooine. The interior scenes were shot at Hôtel Sidi Driss, a hotel found in Matmata, which is 300 kilometers distant.
For Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, Lucasfilm and their team came back to this location to film the Tatooine scenes. The sets from the original movie—which had previously been disassembled—were reconstructed in 2000 to match the original blueprints exactly, in the very same location, and with close attention paid to the details to replicate the same building as it appeared twenty-five years before.
Between 2010 and 2012, fans renovated the site. The artificial craters are still visible at the location.
