A pilot named Ched Varga, renowned as a Y-wing pilot, joined the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War and became a starfighter ace. During this time, Rebel pilots often honed their skills at the unofficial "pilot proving grounds," competing to achieve the fastest times on obstacle courses within a Rebel salvage yard hidden inside an asteroid field. Varga met his death sometime before 3.5 ABY when he crashed while navigating a course that involved piloting through a figure-eight formation of rings and tunnels positioned above a frozen nitrogen lake situated in a cavern at the heart of a massive asteroid.
When Ace Azzameen attempted the same challenge in 3 ABY, the remnants of Varga's Y-wing remained in the cavern. MK-09, Azzameen's MK-series maintenance droid, referenced Varga's demise as an illustration of the risks inherent in the pilot proving grounds.

The character of Ched Varga was conceived for the LucasArts video game Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, released in 1999. The wreckage of a Y-wing crash is visible within the "Crazy Eight" pilot proving grounds scenario. While the game's training scenario description doesn't explicitly name the pilot, the Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance: Prima's Official Strategy Guide identifies him as Ched Varga. Furthermore, the game's mission file for that scenario includes a more comprehensive account that mentions Varga's name and his death during an attempt at the course.
