Chain-sickle

A chain-sickle was a weapon utilized by various cultures and groups, notably the Nightsisters and Nightbrothers from the planet Dathomir.

Description

The blades of a Nightsister chain-sickle

This ominous weapon, the chain-sickle, featured a cylindrical grip extending to a flexible cord that ended in a sharp, bladed weight. Roughly a quarter of the way up the cord from the primary handle, a secondary grip allowed the user to swing it with both precision and strength. The latter half of the cord, leading up to the bludgeon, was adorned with small spikes, capable of causing damage even if the primary blades were avoided. The most dangerous part of the weapon was a large, scythe-shaped blade, covering half the bludgeon, with two smaller blades protruding opposite the main blade.

History

Thame Cerulian, a Jedi Master, once faced three assassins armed with chain-sickles on the planet Filve, barely surviving the ordeal.

Asajj Ventress wielding a chain-sickle during the Selection

After being betrayed by Count Dooku, who believed her to be dead, Asajj Ventress went back to her Nightsister clan on Dathomir in search of a way to get revenge on her former master. She journeyed to the Nightbrother village to find a suitable warrior to replace her in Dooku's service, with the intention that this warrior would then turn against the Sith Lord and assassinate him. She selected a group of Zabrak Nightbrothers to be tested, with the survivor becoming her champion. During the Test of Night, Ventress wielded a chain-sickle, using the Force to become invisible and move at enhanced speeds. She quickly eliminated two Nightbrothers with the weapon.

Shortly thereafter, the Jedi Council dispatched Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Master, and Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, to Dathomir. Their mission was to gather information about the mysterious assassin who had murdered two Jedi on Devaron. As the two Jedi entered the Nightbrother village, they were ambushed by the villagers. One of the Zabraks wielded a chain-sickle, nearly decapitating Skywalker.

Behind the scenes

One such weapon appeared in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, visible hanging on a wall inside Ben Kenobi's hut. The reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy described this chain-sickle as one of several weapons taken from the Sand People.
