The conflict known as the Battle of Goibniu unfolded in space between the forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic and the Galactic Empire. This battle was initiated when Rebel starfighter pilots sought to render the Goibniu Platform inoperable, or destroy it outright. This Imperial supply depot was located in the Goibniu system. The goal of this action was to enable Heavy Lifters to seize Imperial Class-E cargo containers filled with the precious medical substance, bacta.
Gold Squadron made their entrance into the Goibniu system flying Y-wing starfighters, with Blue Squadron providing escort in the somewhat obsolete Z-95 Headhunters. Fortunately for the Rebels, the primary Imperial response came from two squadrons of TIE/LN fighters, the standard space superiority fighter of the Imperial Navy. Gold Squadron's objective was to disable the XQ2 platform known as Goibniu Platform, to facilitate the capture and removal of Imperial bacta by SFNGR Group.
Despite being inferior in numbers and firepower, the Rebels possessed a significant advantage: the presence of several exceptional pilots, specifically members of Rogue Squadron. Pilots from this elite unit, including Rogue Leader and Rogue Two, were prepared to engage Imperial TIE fighters in their A-wings should Gold or Blue Squadron pilots at Goibniu require assistance. The Imperials could have potentially countered this Rebel advantage with Rho Squadron, a unit equipped with Assault Gunboats patrolling either in close proximity or further out within the contested system.
Because players have the opportunity to participate in the "Raid on Goibniu Platform" mission within the Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter computer game, playing as either the Rebel or Imperial forces, both sides possess differing objectives for the mission. Furthermore, achieving victory is not a prerequisite for progressing to the subsequent set of missions. Consequently, the battle itself is considered canon, but the definitive outcome within the established canon remains unknown.
The starships specified within this article are those encountered during the battle Operation: Clean Sweep, utilizing the default spacecraft assigned to the player.
