The Azure system resided within the Outer Rim Territories and the Slice, specifically in the Azure sector. It was the home of the planet Anaxes, but also contained the remnants of that world, known as the Anaxes asteroid belt. This asteroid belt housed two planetoids, named PM-1203 and PM-6986, which were created by a cataclysm that obliterated Anaxes near the end of the Clone Wars. During the war, specifically in 19 BBY, Anaxes was the location of a major engagement between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance, as both sides sought control of the planet and its strategic importance as a Republic shipyard.
The system known as Azure was situated in the Coreward part of both the Outer Rim Territories and the Slice, within the Azure sector. Its location was designated as grid square R-7 on the Standard Galactic Grid. It encompassed the planet Anaxes, a vital shipyard for the Galactic Republic that produced starships. Additionally, it included what remained of the planet after a cataclysm transformed it into an asteroid belt, which also gave rise to at least two planetoids: PM-1203 and PM-6986.
Located along the Perlemian Trade Route super-hyperroute, the Azure system also featured a single star. The orbital periods of the system's celestial bodies were affected by the destruction of Anaxes. Moreover, PM-1203 and PM-6986 were the sites of Fort Anaxes, a former military installation of the Galactic Republic, and a stronghold previously held by the Separatist Alliance.
In the final weeks of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY, the Harch Admiral Trench of the Separatist forces disrupted the Republic's Outer Rim Sieges campaign. He initiated an offensive with the aim of seizing Anaxes, a crucial Republic shipyard and stronghold for their naval forces. Initially, Trench achieved several key victories, prompting the Republic to deploy Jedi Generals Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker to the conflict. However, despite their efforts, Trench's tactical prowess allowed the Confederacy to maintain an advantage. Ultimately, the Republic managed to defeat and kill Admiral Trench and his entire droid army, preventing the destruction of Anaxes at the hands of the Harch, despite their efforts to control Anaxes.
Following Trench's defeat and the conclusion of the war, Anaxes was destroyed in a cataclysmic event, resulting in the formation of an asteroid field and the emergence of planetoids. The cause of this cataclysm was speculated to be a malfunction in the main reactor of the Anaxes shipyard, while more outlandish theories included the use of Separatist superweapons or even deliberate planetary collisions orchestrated by the Jedi. Despite the destruction of Anaxes, the former Republic military base, Fort Anaxes, and a former Separatist stronghold with a vestigial force of Separatist droids, remained, located on the planetoids PM-1203 and PM-6986.
The Azure system made its debut in the new Star Wars canon with "Out of Darkness," the seventh episode of season one of the Star Wars Rebels animated series, which was initially broadcast on November 10, 2014. Its name was officially established in the 2019 reference book, Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition, which places it in the Core Worlds.
The 2022 Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser attraction, which is set between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, also placed Anaxes in the Core.
Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, the Axum system was first introduced in Star Wars: Empire at War, a video game released in 2006 by LucasArts. Prior to its appearance in the game, the system was initially identified in Coruscant and the Core Worlds, a 2003 sourcebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game published by Wizards of the Coast.
