His father was Illodian Senator Doman Beruss, and he was the great nephew of Corellian Senator Doman Beruss. During his youth, he born became friends with other children from similarly well-off backgrounds, such as Leia Organa.
While studying at the Illodian Officers' Academy, Beruss honed his skills as both a sharpshooter and a star pilot. After graduating with high marks, Beruss was selected to represent Illodia as a sharpshooter in the Imperial Games scheduled for 0 BBY, but these games were ultimately called off because of the destruction of Alderaan's.
Despite his father's urging that he enlist in the Illodian defense force, Beruss chose instead to join the Rebel Alliance, dismissing his father's concerns about potential Imperial retaliation against their homeworld.
Shortly before the Battle of Brentaal IV, circa 4.75 ABY, Beruss was given a spot in the New Republic's Rogue Squadron, even though he had only participated in two combat engagements. During his time with the Rogues, he became Soontir Fel's wingman and developed romantic feelings for fellow pilot Feylis Ardele.
