Biography

Service within Cog Hive Seven

During the twilight years of the Galactic Republic, Augustine Smight, a young recruit, was employed as a corrections officer at the Cog Hive Seven space station prison. Like all guards in the facility, he had a control device called a dropbox, which could execute inmates by triggering subatomic electrostatic detonators implanted in their hearts.

Darth Maul, operating under the alias Jagganath, gained entry to the prison. Smight was responsible for scanning him for infections and concealed weapons. He attempted to intimidate the Sith Lord by detailing the harsh realities of prison life, but his shaky voice and trembling hand revealed his anxiety.

When a father and son launched an escape attempt, barricading themselves in the prison's medbay, Smight was among the guards who responded. Along with a fellow officer, he escorted Maul in a crowded service lift, keeping his blaster pressed against the Zabrak's back until verbally threatened. He escorted Maul to the office of Warden Sadiki Blirr, after which he was dismissed. He expressed reservations about this decision but was waved away impatiently.

Prior to one of the prison's infamous fighting matches, Sadiki instructed Smight to wait for Maul in a corridor outside his cell. The Warden had prepared zip-tie restraints to hinder Maul's performance in the upcoming fight. Smight secured these restraints to Maul's ankles, anchoring them to the floor. Maul observed that the officer's erratic behavior indicated glitterstim use to bolster his courage. When Maul commented on his spice-induced state, the young guard reacted defensively and quickly left the cell.

Encounter with the Prison Warden

Emboldened by the effects of spice, Smight later attended a meeting with several other officers. While awaiting the Warden, he conversed with a portly guard named Hootkins. Upon Sadiki's arrival, she initiated a holoprojector communication with Jabba the Hutt.

She then identified Smight and his fellow officers to the Hutt as his undercover agents, tasked with locating the arms dealer Iram Radique.

Smight felt a surge of panic at the accusations but tried to remain composed. Sadiki requested that Jabba identify his men, promising to return them unharmed. However, Jabba denied any knowledge of them and showed no concern for their fate.

The Warden then opened a panel, revealing approaching prison gang members. She threatened to unleash the prisoners on the unarmed guards unless someone confessed the truth. Hootkins was the first to break, betraying all the disloyal members, including Smight.

Sadiki abandoned them to their fate. Amidst the guards' violent slaughter, Smight managed to escape into a dark passageway.

Flight for Survival

Smight wandered through the prison tunnels in fear until he encountered a massive Syrox worm. Desperate to avoid being eaten, he fled back through the corridors, where he was recaptured by the gang members who had killed his colleagues. Just before the prisoners attacked him, he managed to warn Vasco Nailhead and Strabo about the Syrox. However, his warning was too late to save the gangs from the creature.

Smight escaped once more by hiding and crawling quietly into a conduit. Following this ordeal, he was haunted by what he had witnessed and briefly lost his will to live.

He stumbled upon a chemical laboratory, correctly deducing it to be Radique's secret headquarters. He explored the area, discovering a variety of customized weapons. Hoping to leverage his findings for a higher position within the Desilijic Clan, Smight quickly inventoried the weapons and armed himself with a DT-12 blaster pistol. Before he could leave, however, he was attacked by one of Radique's men and knocked unconscious by a blow to the head. Upon waking, he found himself gagged and bound by his hands and ankles.

Final Showdown with Darth Maul

Iram Radique's inner circle convened with Darth Maul in the laboratory to discuss the synthetic lightsabers Radique was attempting to produce. Maul argued that the lightsabers were flawed and would malfunction. He challenged the prisoner Zero to attack him with one of the lightsabers to prove his point. Instead, Zero instructed the Chadra-Fan Coyle to bring Smight forward. The guard's bonds were cut, and he was handed a lightsaber, but the gag remained in place.

Ordered to kill the Zabrak, Smight initially hesitated due to humiliation, but a murderous determination took over. Maul believed that the prison guard experienced a moment of sacred self-actualization in deciding to wield the lightsaber. Before he could strike down the Sith Lord, however, the weapon malfunctioned, instantly killing Smight by piercing his face and mutilating his body.

Personality and traits

Augustine Smight was a nervous officer with occasional cruelty. Despite his attempts to appear brave, his fears were evident to the prisoners, and he yielded whenever Darth Maul issued a verbal threat.

Smight was prone to self-pity, viewing himself as cowardly, inadequate, and incompetent. These feelings of self-doubt and uncertainty were especially pronounced when he faced personal danger.

He possessed a strong knowledge of weapons, able to identify various types of guns and explosives and assess their adherence to factory specifications.

Smight was addicted to spice, which he believed enhanced his courage and senses.
