The year 22 BBY saw the Clone Wars raging between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic. It was during this time that General Grievous made an attempt to seize Outpost 716, a Republic installation manned by clone troopers under the leadership of Jedi General Mayanka Catrine, who was supported by her [Padawan](/article/padawan], Jedi Commander Agustin. Count Dooku, citing her skills and perceived disposability, later deployed his personal [assassin](/article/assassin] and apprentice, Asajj Ventress, in a further attempt to secure Outpost 716. Darth Sidious, Dooku's Sith Master, expressed doubts about Ventress's ability to succeed where Grievous had failed, but Dooku assured him in a holographic communication aboard his Punworcca 116-class interstellar sloop that the base would soon be captured. Ventress ultimately succeeded through deception, allowing herself to be captured and striking only after the Jedi had left for another assignment.
Immediately following Dooku's conversation with Sidious, Ventress returned to Dooku and demanded to be elevated to the status of a Sith Lord, pointing out that she had achieved what Grievous could not. Instead, Dooku instructed her to find a Jedi artifact as proof of her worth. Her investigation on the Moon of Staggec in the Outer Rim Territories revealed that Grievous had been Dooku's first choice for locating the artifact.
