Alexi Garyn

Alexi Garyn, also known as "Lex", was a Human male who belonged to the Black Sun criminal organization. Garyn worked as a Vigo for many years, eventually rising to the position of Underlord, the syndicate's top rank. In the years leading up to the Order of the Sith Lords' return during the final decades of the Galactic Republic, Garyn led the Vigos and oversaw the syndicate's considerable expansion. During an attack by the Sith Darth Maul in 33 BBY, Garyn and the other Black Sun leaders were brutally murdered.

Biography

Early life

Born on [Ralltiir](/article/ralltiir-legends], Alexi Garyn was a Force-sensitive male Human. The Jedi Order did not identify him early enough, so he was deemed too old to begin training and was not accepted into the Order. Garyn's ambition to become a Jedi Knight faded, so he chose to develop his skills in a different field, joining the Black Sun crime syndicate.

By 76 BBY, Black Sun's Vigos were grooming Garyn to take over the organization. Having achieved the rank of Vigo, it was only a matter of time before he defeated his rivals, such as Boss Cabra, to claim the top spot. Despite some conflict with Damask Holdings and their support for Boss Cabra, Garyn achieved his desired position of Underlord and cultivated many relationships across the galaxy. Under his leadership, Black Sun established a terrifying presence that was felt on every planet from the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim Territories. Despite commanding thousands of soldiers, Garyn remained in his fortress on Ralltiir, surrounded by an elite guard. His direct subordinates included the nine Vigos, his personal bodyguard, a highly skilled female warrior named Mighella, and his trusted secretary Oolth.

Enemy of the Sith

During the reign of King Ars Veruna of Naboo, Garyn was invited to his royal table during a feast intended to drown out the cheers for Veruna's rival, Padmé Naberrie, outside Theed Palace. The feast coincided with the infamous Trade Summit on Eriadu. Garyn took control of Naboo's rare plasma exports, supporting Veruna's strong opposition to Magister Hego Damask. Garyn felt that Damask had betrayed the trust of Black Sun's Vigos and threatened his chance to secure the lucrative plasma-export contract with Naboo.

Unbeknownst to Garyn, Naboo's Senator Palpatine, who was also Darth Sidious, the Sith apprentice of Magister Damask, the alter-ego of Darth Plagueis, had briefly stopped at Veruna's court on his way to the Eriadu Summit. Palpatine believed that Garyn's presence at the feast marked him for death because his dark master saw Garyn's relationship with Veruna as a clear betrayal. Similarly, Garyn's subsequent involvement in Veruna's disastrous nuclear attack on the Muun's fortress on Sojourn would seal his fate. Although Sidious was the true mastermind behind the attack (which surprisingly failed in its attempt to assassinate Damask), he and his master agreed that the Zabrak assassin Darth Maul, who had originally secured the proscribed nuclear device, should be sent to eliminate the Vigos and Garyn as retribution for their treacherous involvement. This untraceable Sith attack would effectively cripple the formidable crime syndicate for years to come, making it difficult for them to recover. Plagueis and Sidious believed that Black Sun, as it existed, posed too great a threat and an unnecessary obstacle to the Grand Plan for the Sith's swift galactic conquest.

Darth Maul kills Alexi Garyn.

Sidious ordered Maul to initially hunt down two Vigos, anticipating that Garyn would sense the impending purge and order the remaining Vigos to his fortress on Ralltiir, believing it to be impenetrable. Following the deaths of Vigos Darnada and Morn, Garyn did exactly that, gathering all the remaining Vigos in one location. The Vigos and Garyn fortified the complex, hoping to kill the Zabrak assassin. When Maul arrived, he swiftly cut through the bodyguards without taking a single hit. As the Vigos tried to escape, Garyn sealed them in the audience chamber while he, Mighella, and Oolth fled down a turbolift. As Maul's lightsaber ended the lives of his Vigos, Garyn attempted to reach his yacht below the fortress, but the assassin caught him before he could board.

Maul ignited his crimson lightsaber and attacked the Nightsister Mighella, who recognized him as a Nightbrother from Dathomir before he cut her in half at the waist. While Oolth escaped, Maul focused on Garyn and prepared to kill him. Revealing himself as a Sith, Maul was distracted by his own pride and arrogance, allowing Garyn to attack him and draw blood. Enraged, Maul grabbed Garyn by the throat and forced him underwater, drowning him and leaving his lifeless body in the small reservoir.

Legacy

After the deaths of Garyn and the other Vigos, Black Sun spiraled out of control and nearly collapsed, with the few remaining members scattering over the next decade. Despite this apparent defeat, Black Sun survived, and several Vigos competed for power. An attempt to regulate bota with the Hutts during the Clone Wars failed and further weakened the organization. However, Black Sun recovered and became stronger than ever under the leadership of Underlord Dal Perhi, with the help of a Falleen named Xizor, who eventually seized control and led Black Sun back to prosperity during the Galactic Empire. Despite this, surviving members of the organization's upper echelons who had served under Garyn joined forces around 0 ABY to form a group called the Garyn Raiders. Operating from a base on the moon Rori, the Raiders targeted Imperial ships, avenging their fallen leader by harassing the Sith-governed Empire.
