The comic strip titled "A Day's Duty" features writing by Martin Fisher, illustrations by Eva Widermann, and editing by Gunther Nickel. Egmont UK Ltd published the story within the fifteenth edition of the Star Wars Rebels Magazine series, which became available on February 24 of 2016.
Fisher indicates the narrative unfolds in the interval between two Star Wars Rebels episodes, specifically "Stealth Strike" and "The Future of the Force."
The Ghost's crew departs for a supply acquisition mission to Crandel, leaving Ezra Bridger stationed on the Phoenix home frigate. His task is to receive instruction from Commander Jun Sato regarding the operational mechanics of the larger ships within the rebel fleet. Mizel Pomdak joins him, arriving late to the lesson after tripping. Mizel expresses his sleep deprivation to Sato, citing assigned technical manual readings. Sato responds with a threat of expulsion, which Ezra counters by introducing himself to Mizel and diffusing the situation. Mizel, already familiar with Ezra's reputation, expresses his admiration. The lesson commences, focusing on the interconnected functioning of the engines and reactor systems of a CR90 Corvette.
Later, while working together, Ezra inquires about Mizel's motivations for opposing the Empire. Mizel reveals he stowed away, seeing through the Empire's deception unlike his family. He expresses his desire to contribute meaningfully but feels unsuccessful since joining the rebel fleet. Despite his discouragement, he finds solace in Ezra's presence, inspired by the Jedi. Ezra clarifies that he is not yet a Jedi, and even Jedi are fallible. Spotting a fault in Mizel's circuitry, Ezra offers assistance and encouragement.
Subsequently, after completing modifications to a defense battery, Sato acknowledges Ezra's efforts but finds Mizel's work inadequate, expressing a desire to see Mizel's potential realized. An A Wing emerges from hyperspace near Rinn after being attacked, followed by Imperial ships deploying TIE fighters. Phoenix squadron engages in interception. Ezra, at a station, informs Sato about a disabled battery, prompting Sato to send Mizel to repair it, reassuring him of his belief in Mizel's capabilities. Phoenix three is destroyed during the battle. Mizel initially fails, causing an explosion, but then identifies and corrects Ezra's earlier mistake, ultimately restoring the battery and shifting the battle's momentum.
The Ghost arrives, and the fleet jumps to hyperspace, escaping the battle. Ezra recounts his day and experiences with Mizel to the Spectres. Sato arrives and praises both Ezra and Mizel. Mizel reveals Ezra's earlier error, and Ezra returns to his role as Kanan's student.
