910 Special

The 910 Special, a Podracer model, was produced by Turca. This vehicle, also referred to as the Turca Special, exhibited balanced performance characteristics, featuring a respectable maximum velocity, a moderate rate of acceleration, and a well-calibrated maintenance system. While possessing adequate maneuverability, its primary weakness lay in its cooling capacity, leading to rapid overheating during prolonged periods of high-speed operation. However, its standout feature was undoubtedly its highly effective air brakes.

Toy Dampner, a Podracer pilot, owned a significantly modified 910 Special. Recognizing the limitations of the vehicle's original heat management system, Dampner installed a superior coolant pump, enabling the 910 to cool down more quickly after utilizing its boost function. Dampner skillfully piloted his black and white Turca Special on the race courses of the moon Oovo IV, navigating the treacherous terrain of a penal colony at high speeds.

Description

The 910 Special Podracer, also known as the Turca Special, was conceived by Turca around the year 32 BBY. This Podracer was constructed with two substantial engines joined together through energy binders. A single cockpit, connected by a pair of black cables, provided control over the engines. The engine turbines were encased in a metallic material, exhibiting a generally cylindrical form. Each cylindrical engine was defended by a square shield positioned atop it. These shields had two large rectangular shapes extending from the rear, safeguarding the left and right sides of the engine exhaust ports. The cockpit had a shape that was roughly an isosceles triangle, and it was designed to accommodate one pilot only.

The 910 Special possessed average statistics and components. Its original cooling systems, however, were inadequate. Toy Dampner, a Podracer pilot, acquired one Turca Special and extensively modified it. Unhappy with the factory cooling, Dampner replaced it with the best coolant pump available. This upgrade allowed for a faster cool-down period after using the boosters. Dampner's modifications resulted in a very balanced racing machine. Its most notable strengths were its air brakes and repulsorgrip. The air brakes gave it the ability to decelerate quicker than other Podracers, aiding Dampner in navigating sharp turns. The repulsorgrip offered Dampner greater control over different terrains, but Dampner had modified his Podracer specifically for the race courses located on the moon Oovo IV, which were primarily composed of cement and metal roads, with occasional rocky sections.

The Special's fuel injector provided reasonable acceleration, and although the Thrust Coil limited the top speed, the Podracer quickly reached its maximum velocity. Records indicate that the Turca Special's speed was eventually improved to 985 kpm. Furthermore, the 910 Special featured a robust repair unit, enabling Dampner to perform in-flight repairs with ease, allowing him to remain competitive on hazardous tracks. Overall, Dampner's Podracer was ranked third in terms of acceleration and repair capabilities among the Podracers participating in the 32 BBY racing season. His Turca Special also achieved the second-highest rating for air brakes, surpassed only by Wan Sandage's Elsinore-Cordova Engineering TurboDyne 99-U Podracer, piloted by Devlikk.

History

Toy Dampner owned a Turca Special.

Sometime around 32 BBY, Turca developed the 910 Special Podracer, and one of these vehicles ended up in the possession of Toy Dampner, a blue-skinned Podracer pilot known for his preference for the courses located on Oovo IV, the fourth moon of the gas giant Oovo. These courses were largely urban, winding through the prison complex of Desolation Alley. Unsatisfied with the 910 Special's original configuration, Dampner implemented various modifications, most notably the addition of the best coolant pump he could find. The Podracer was repainted with black stripes on a white base, mirroring the color scheme of the flag Dampner used to represent himself in the sport.

Dampner and his Podracer gained recognition on Oovo IV, and Dampner became a fan favorite on the Executioner course, which was named after the anti-gravity tunnels filled with ore that were a feature of the track, which was the first course of the Semipro Podracing Circuit. Dampner set a record lap time of 01:31.540 minutes, and a record race time of 04:42.310 minutes. Dampner, who was known for showing off, liked to demonstrate the capabilities of his Turca Special to his acquaintances in Desolation Alley.

Dampner also raced the vehicle on a race course located on the planet Baroonda. Fode Annodue, the Troig race commentator, commented that Dampner's rig appeared to be fast.

Behind the scenes

The 910 Special as seen during an animatic

The 910 Special Podracer made its debut in the 1999 video game Star Wars Episode I: Racer, but it was initially designed for the Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace film of 1999 that the game was based on. Although the Podracer was included in the film's animatic stages, it was removed from the final cut, and its scenes were replaced with scenes featuring Clegg Holdfast piloting his Keizar-Volvec KV9T9-B Wasp Podracer. The animatics are available for viewing in the special features section of the The Phantom Menace DVD.

Additional information regarding the Podracer was provided in two strategy guides released alongside Episode I Racer. The Turca Podracer was later briefly mentioned in 2008's The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia within an entry dedicated to Toy Dampner.
